Evil - a blend of psychological and supernatural horror

The horror genre has become more bolder and bloodier in the recent years, and it has also become a mainstream on television with more and more series being produced. In this post, I take a look at a new series called Evil that examines the crossroads where supernatural belief and science collide.

Evil aired on CBS last week. It brings the skeptical forensic psychologist Dr Kristen Bouchard, played by Katja Herbers, who is employed by the Queens DA, face to face with her own demons and evil in human form.

The pilot episode starts with Bouchard analyzing a defendant, Orson LeRoux, in her latest trial whose defense team is using demonic possession to try and get an insanity plea. However, she is unable to make a decision, she is fired.

This sudden status brings her into the employment of David Acosta - an assessor for the Catholic Church - who hires her to determine if LeRoux truly insane or possessed by some ungodly spirit. Acosta is played by Mike Coulter who is best know for his television role as Luke Cage.

The pilot, while hinting at supernatural horror, has so far delivered a very fresh take on psychological horror especially on television and seeing Herbers having a night terror is quite alarming.

There is also some sexual attraction between Herbers and Acosta which interestingly is a point of torment for Herbers. While the pilot has focused on Herbers, I believe we will get to see the characters' inner demons.
